If you’ve found yourself in an unexpected situation that feels out of this world — then this short reflection is for you.
Have you ever felt a sense of fear or frustration when thinking about your own life circumstances, especially when comparing them to what would be considered “normal” (or the expected average based on the bell curve)? In moments like these, thoughts may arise such as: “I’m atypical,” or even “I must have done something wrong to end up in this situation.”
But in those moments, remember: just as there are no two identical fingerprints on Earth, there are no two identical human destinies either. Every life story is unique and special — and even after all these years, as a psychologist I still encounter situations on a weekly basis that feel like they came straight out of a Hollywood-style movie. We often tend to think that only our life is unusually different, specific, or even strange.
Because of the flourishing, thriving nature of life itself, human stories can be so richly varied that I can confidently say — just about anyone’s life could be turned into a multi-episode, Netflix-style drama series – a truly captivating one at that!
So if you’ve had thoughts like these lately, maybe this next healing phrase could come in handy:
“Well, this is Hollywood!”
Because really — what else would you expect in a Hollywood-style movie, if not atypical cases, surprising twists, or even dramatic moments?
This phrase can help you in a few powerful ways:
1. Its humor is healing — it softens the tension that can come from an absurd or overwhelming situation and helps you feel lighter instantly.
2. It neutralizes the idea of “abnormality” — the question “How could this happen to me?” loses its weight.
3. It reminds you that you are the main character – the movie metaphor places your story on an imaginary screen — and brings you back into your role as the protagonist.
So, if you find yourself in a new or unexpected situation, go ahead — say it out loud to yourself, or to others, and share a good laugh together:
“This life of mine —a Hollywood-style movie, lemons and all! And if life gives me lemons today, with a little awareness I can still turn them into lemonade I’ll actually enjoy.”
