Family dynamics shape the roles we take on, the way we relate to one another, and even how we see ourselves. Like a spider web, a family is an interconnected system where a change in one person can affect everyone else. In this article, we explore how unhealthy family patterns and fixed family roles develop, why they can leave us feeling stuck, and how understanding your family dynamics can help you create healthier relationships and meaningful change.

Although it’s uncommon for spiders to share the same web, I often describe family dynamics through this image: a web, where each spider represents a family member.

In most families, a well-established structure emerges: each family member is tied into a fixed position – connected by countless strands that symbolize the invisible bonds between them. In this interconnected system, every moment, however small, ripples through the structure – showing how deeply connected and interdependent the family truly is.

However, this interconnectedness also means that family dynamics can trap individuals in certain roles or situations. Often, a person has little choice but to take on – and remain in – that assigned role. Think, for example, of a teenager navigating expectations placed on them by parents or siblings.

Sometimes, some of these “spiders” – the clients who comes to see me – feel a powerful urge to move beyond their fixed positions. Most people reach out when they are ready for change, when the emotional weight of their family’s pattern has simply become too heavy to carry.

In our consultation, we explore the unique structure of the client’s family and co-create a personalized, practical strategy in order to gently shift the stuck family pattern in ways that support not only the individual but the whole system.

Why does this approach work? Because you choose your own path and commit to changes at the pace that feels right for you.

Book a one-on-one consultation, and together we will explore how you can begin reshaping your own “family web” – with surprising speed and ease!
